In our world today we can see many differences around us. We don’t often recognize just how powerful our military is until its time for us to defend ourselves against foreign nations. We can fail to see just how democratic election system is until we see other countries that elect leaders only to have them deposed by the opposition. We may not appreciate the abundance of food in this country until we see how many people actual go to bed each night starving. However we can understand the superiority in these things just as God wants us to see His holiness and our need for it.

In a pew research study conducted June 8-18 and June 27 to July 9 found that many people in America said belief in God is not needed to be moral. In fact in this same study in 2011 42 percent who identify themselves as protestant evangelicals said belief in God is not needed to be moral and now in 2017 the number has now grown to 45 percent. If belief in God is not necessary to be moral what does that say about what we believe who God is?

On the grand stage of history God delivered Israel from the bondage of slavery from Egypt. Now that the Israelites have been delivered they are now in a new relationship with God. However their relationship with him must be developed and maintained. But how can that happen?

By the end of Exodus God has established his covenant with Israel. He has given them a means to worship him in the tabernacle. Now God established his means for Israel to worship Him and live among fellow believers. In order for Israel to have a right relationship with the Lord they must understand two fundamental beliefs: the seriousness of sin and the holiness of God.

In the book of Leviticus chapters one through three we see that God established a sacrificial system that provided Israel with a way to worship Him and have a right relationship with Him and other believers. Now in Leviticus God lays out just how Israel can develop and maintain this relationship. The entire animal sacrifice system foreshadows the work of Christ and the cross. This is accomplished by understanding the severity of sin and the holiness of God.

This sacrificial system allows us to see not only how God provided for the means of reconciliation. It demonstrates to us today for a need of a savior that God has provided in the work of Christ through our faith in him. When believers begin to understand God’s holiness our desire for a relationship with Him not only brings reconciliation but joy and peace for all eternity. It is in God’s holiness where we have true peace with God.

The Gift of Stewardship

After Moses lead the people out of captivity from Egypt it was God’s sovereignty that lead Israel through the wilderness up to the borders of the promise land. Now we learn it was in the tabernacle where God was to make his holy habitation and speak to man. It is the tabernacle where we see God’s physical pictures to foreshadow spiritual truths.

As God led the Israelites into a new place, a new relationship His desire for them was to worship Him and enjoy that newness with his presence. When we desire to give back to God what he has already provided it demonstrates our love for him and his desire to dwell with us and use us for the building of His kingdom. Just as we delight to worship and bring our offering and stewardship to God, we too can enjoy our relationship with Christ in the newness of life. Today in our relationship with Christ we enjoy a relationship with Him so that we might worship and serve him.

Right Perspective Right Relationship

When God gave the Ten Commandments they were never intended as a means to require works for salvation. They were provided for the welfare of God’s people. When believers follow Jesus and his teaching we understand that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind (Mt 22:27). And to love your neighbor as yourself (Mt 22:39). Jesus said, “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Mt 22:40). So then why the law, or why the commandments?

The Ten Commandments have never been more relevant and more needed than times such as these. However we must have a right understanding of the commandments so that we can also have a right relationship with God. The commandments are in effect our response to the love that we have to God and demonstrate in our lives to others. Today’s message is from Exodus 20:1-17. For greater understanding of the commandments read this handout to learn what Jesus said about the commandments JESUS and the TEN COMMANDMENTS

Jesus calms the storm

23 “And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Save us, Lord; we are perishing.’ 26 And he said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?’ Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, ‘What sort of man is this, that even the winds and sea obey him?” (Matthew 8:23-27) ESV.

Jesus wanted the disciples to realize that their faith needed to be the one whom they decided to follow––him. As we also face fearful situations, we too are reminded today that Jesus wants us to realize that our faith needs to be whom we follow––him.

Just as the disciples got in a boat with Jesus they found themselves caught in a life-threatening storm when they crossed the Sea of Galilee. The Sea of Galilee is actually 600 feet below sea level and cold winds coming down from nearby Mount Hermon create a blender style cup of water producing sudden and violent storms.

Many of these disciples were not only fishermen, but also experienced sailors. They were use to storms on the sea. Those of us who live in Florida are also somewhat use to experiencing the arrival of hurricanes. When the disciples cried out, ‘Save us Lord; we are perishing” (v. 25) they were basically saying “Lord don’t you see what’s happening? Don’t you care about us?” When hurricanes suddenly develop many of us watch and wait to see just where it is going. On September 11, 2017 Hurricane Irma continued on its path and many of us waited and watched in uncertainty. The question we all have to ask ourselves is not where is the storm going, but where is our faith.

All of us experience storms in our life. We experience health issues, economic trouble, and relationship problems and so we too pray, “Lord I am perishing, don’t you care?” The issue for us is not the storm it’s the uncertainty. It’s the uncertainty in the storms of our lives that challenge our faith.

The boat in this passage can be an object lesson in that the boat is our life. It takes us through all the trials and challenges of the news we don’t want such as the doctor’s prognosis, the bills in the mailbox, or a family member who won’t talk to us anymore. However, as you read this passage ask yourself, “Where is Jesus while all this was going on?” Oh yes, he was right there with the disciples, in the boat! So we are reminded the words God told Joshua he tells us, “I will not leave you or forsake you” (Joshua 1:5).

Pastor and author Mark Batterson said, “Tragedy does not define us. By faith, we define it. One way or the other, it becomes a defining moment.” Perhaps today is the defining moment in your life where you need affirm God’s care and love for you even in the midst of your storm.

All of us can praise the Lord no matter where we are. Whether it’s an impending hurricane or the storm in your life Jesus wants us to remain faithful and trusting in his care for us. What is the storm in your life? Tonight as you go to bed, let the words of the psalmist be your prayer, “I will lie down in peace and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).

The Joy of Forgiveness

In each of our lives sin can steal the joy God has intended from a right relationship with Him. It is God’s desire that our relationship with him be free from sin. However in all of our lives we fall prey to temptation.

King David of Israel fell prey to temptation in his adultery with Bathsheba. The fallout from this sin led David to think he had to cover up his sin, which resulted in even more damage between his relationship with the Lord.

Here in Psalm 32 David testified that being silent about sin only brings sorrow, but confessing sin to the Lord means having a life of true joy. Here in this message we see four incentives we have in confessing our sin to the Lord. When we allow God to instruct us and become honest with our sin with Him we are delivered from sorrow into joy.

The Prayer of Restoration

God’s desire for our relationship with him is his utmost concern for his creation. He has redeemed us through faith in his Son, Jesus Christ. However our relationship becomes separated from him when we sin. Nevertheless God allows our relationship with him to become close and real when we repent of our sin through confession.

King David of Israel was a man after God’s own heart, yet he sinned greatly even at the apex of his rule. Here in this message we hear how David’s confession was a prayer of restoration. His prayer was not simply to avoid condemnation, but to be restored to the joy and gladness he experienced before his great sin.

Psalm 51 is that confession of by King David. In this penitential psalm we read of the heart of David. His confession declares of his great need for mercy and the grace only God can provide through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Best News Ever Heard

Each of us get news from time to time. Sometimes it involves us directly and other times it does not. However the difference is not the news we get, but the hope that we have. When Mary Magdalene announced the news of the risen Jesus to the grieving disciples she said, “I have seen the Lord.” So the Bible announces hope for everyone who gets the news of the resurrection.

In this message we see three reasons for the best news ever heard, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The news of the resurrection demands a response from everyone, because that news directly effects everyone for salvation. The key verse for this message is the gospel of John 20:18.

7th Word From The Cross – Committal

If you knew the final moments of your life what words would you choose to say? The last words Jesus spoke was, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46). Just prior to the death of Jesus on the cross he faced the choice, save himself or save the world. While his choice saves us, his choice forces everyone to make a decision. Whom will you choose?

In this message we conclude our sermon series: 7 Words from the Cross. In it we are faced with the decision to define our relationship with Jesus Christ. His decision was made and so now we are given that same choice.
